United States: Central Bank Swaps to the Eurozone, UK, and Canada, 2001

Purpose

To “facilitate the functioning of financial markets and provide liquidity in US dollars” to foreign banks whose US operations had been disrupted by disturbances in the US (Fed 2002b)

    The ECB repaid its full borrowing on Sept. 17, 2001; after 30 days, the augmented swap line for Canada reverted to USD 2 billion, and the two newly created lines expired
